Our shadows stretch long and thin behind us as we walk in the direction of the red golden sunset. Tsurk will be Tsurk, so he talks a lot, but I’m starting to grow used to his constant, upbeat prattle.

I’m afraid that if I keep listening to him, I might even grow to like it.

While I’m not really trying to pry into his thoughts, Tsurk is thinking of me very heavily at the moment and I can’t help but pick up snippets. Like most of what goes on in Tsurk’s mind, there’s little in the way of deceit or corruption. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not a pure hearted little choir boy. I show up in his mind quite a bit, usually without any clothes on. But one thing I never pick up on from Tsurk is malice in any form.

He may not always go about it in the right way, but Tsurk genuinely cares about his fellow sapients and wants to make them happy. Specifically, he wants to make ME happy, and I don’t know how I feel about that yet. It seems like we have only known each other a short while, and yet there’s a familiarity between us that could easily become true intimacy.

On an emotional level, I mean. Obviously we’ve already become physically intimate. Damn, is THAT what I look like when I orgasm? Like I’m waking up after a three day bender? Fuck, thinking about sex makes me want to actually have sex. With Tsurk, who is now hanging out in my mind just as I’m loitering in his.

I’m so lost in the tangle of our thoughts that I almost miss his question.

“How are those boots working out for you? Sipri can tighten up the fit, if you want.”

I blink several times and draw myself out of the mindscape and back to the physical realm.

“They feel fine, they’re just ugly.”

Tsurk laughs as we begin scaling the low grade leading up to the ravaged comm tower.

“They are at that, but they keep your feet out of the mud. I take it your aesthetics are more refined as pertains to footwear?”

“That’s an understatement.” I sigh, casting my mind back to shopping with my mother. “I used to have over a hundred pair of shoes.”

“A hundred?” Tsurk stops in his tracks to gape at me.

“Oh, close your mouth, Tsurk. That’s not that high a number, trust me.”

“I just can’t conceive of needing that many different pair of shoes.”

We begin our hike anew, falling into the shadow of the comm tower.

“Need is a relative term. I had a few pair of riding boots, some flats for dancing, and delicately tapered heels to go with any outfit.”

Tsurk smiles, and I can feel his joy at my happy memory. I wish he’d stop being so fucking perfect, because for some reason I still want to be mad at him.

“What was your favorite pair?”

That almost makes me stumble. No man has ever been interested enough to ask me that question, not even my own father and certainly not Richard.
